3-VIEW DESIGN DETAIL FOR "DOVE" ULTRALIGHT
from New Mexico sojourn, 1973
featuring hybrid organic/mechanical landing gear and birdlike flare-stall landing characteristics
Details of interest:
Pilot "wears" balloon wheels attached to sleeves which can slide inward (for retracting) or outward (for landing) along axle when, in the latter case, axle is pulled back and allowed to drop beneath airframe. Pilot's shoes are secured within footplates welded to sleeves; because these sleeves can rotate as well as slide along axle, the rear-curving heel of the footplates extends downward as a braking skid when pilot raises toes close to vertical.
As in the short-fuselage U-control "combat" model airplanes of the '50s, the elevator and "flaps" rotate in opposite directions, allowing for almost birdlike "flare and drop" landings. Rudder and aileron control remains conventional.
The two long outrigger skids, made from flexible fiberglass or carbon-fiber-enhanced material, help keep the propeller and delicate tail assembly out of the dirt, as well as some of the weight off the pilot's legs during takeoff and landing.
The following drawing and designs were done in the first years after becoming a believer in Messiah Yeshua.
